Ready to transfer? Checklist

1. Create the Delta SkyMiles account first, in exactly the same name as your Marriott Bonvoy account. Brand-new accounts are more likely to be held for review, so open it days ahead if you can.
2. Find the award before you move anything. Search Delta SkyMiles's own site (or an award-search tool) and confirm the seat or room and the exact points needed, taxes included. Award space isn't the same as cash space.
3. Move the exact amount in one go. Don't do a small "test" transfer: people report that test transfers trigger fraud holds. Expected time for this step: 1-7 days.
4. If it's slow, call. Some airlines can hold an award while points arrive. If a transfer is stuck, call the program; holds of several days happen, and points can't be moved back.
5. Hotel points to miles are slow and lossy. Use them only to top up a specific award.
