Transfer your points or cash them out?
Cashing out, statement credits and basic travel portals usually get you about 1¢ a point. Moving the same points to a good airline or hotel partner is valued at about 1.5–1.7¢ a point by the big points sites. On 100,000 points that gap is often hundreds of dollars.

When cashing out is the right call
- You have no trip in mind. Points don't earn interest, and programs can devalue. A sure 1¢ beats a maybe.
- The award you want isn't available. A transfer only pays off if there's a seat or room to book. Find it first, then transfer.
- Taxes and surcharges eat the value. Some programs add big fees to awards on certain airlines, which can wipe out the gap.
- You'd be stranding points. Transfers are usually one-way. Leftover miles in a program you rarely use are worth little.
